Bull’s Eye Word Game

Bull’s Eye is a slightly different take on word games from sggc DNA Family Games. The busy game board contains an identical scoring track from 1 to 100 for each player. Each round, form a word of between 2 and 6 letters, scoring the variable points associated with the letters. Certain scoring spaces provide bonus cards, some of which may be bad. Many painfully clear instruction videos on the site. First to…

Royal Wedding Games

Some people just don’t get it … [1] Top Trumps Royal Wedding A selection of playing cards Stunned, I am, that I could not find a William and Kate Chess set or Draughts set. [1] I’m one of those people.

The Nth Level Of Abstraction

During the last week, the RPG Bloggers Network brought an interesting post to my attention: “Discussion: Time Gaps” at Reality Refracted . This got me to thinking about the hierarchy of abstraction, and how often we (GMs) move from one level to another in the course of a typical game session, and how we can use a seemingly inappropriate level of …

Earthdawn Core Rulebooks at half price until Tuesday morning

Looks like the wedding of William and Kate is also good for us Earthdawn fans or roleplayers in general. Mongoose publishing announced that all of their core rulebooks will be cut at half price until…

Teacher Effectively Uses an RPG to Teach World Issues

In what apparently originated in my city, John Hunter has developed an incredible role playing game experience he calls The World Peace Game, for his 10 year old gifted students. The video below will no doubt give the best description of his game, so I won’t try to tell it better than the man himself: For more information on this …

Castles & Crusades: First Thoughts

I mentioned earlier that I was thinking about some old school stuff and looked at the major contenders. The one that just seemed to hit my sweet spot for old school feel, crunchiness of the rules and general over all mechanics was Castles & Crusades. I got my copies of Castle & Crusades Players Handbook

April Board and Card Game Patents

I’m surprised to see that there are only three patents this month, not including card shufflers and readers, and not including video game only patents. Conditional application of hit card – A blackjack variant, where you are dealt an optional card which you can exchange, along with a variable payout table if you do so. 21 to the river – A blackjack/poker…

The creative process in game design or sandpaper golem sex and letting go of ideas

Yesterday I came up with a brand new game.  In fact, I came up with a new board game and a new creature to add to my slowly growing list of Pathfinder oddities, both based on the same idea. While doing the creative lifting that goes in to making something like this I was also conversing with a friend who suggested that I document this process in writing. …

Small World Underground

Standalone game (can also be combined, natch), new races, new maps, a new mechanic (relics), and “some additional features that will make it even more tactical” according to DoW PR. The rule book is not yet available, so I can’t tell you more. Teasers .

I’m on the RedPhoneZone movie podcast, talking about epic/historical movies

Ethan and Aaron over at RedPhoneZone invited me on to their podcast to discuss historical epics, film, focusing on the Ethnographical, psuedo-biographical and antidisestablishmentarianism position that all film is actuality as reflected by societal mores.  Nah, just kidding, we jabber on about our favorite six flicks and swear a bunch. I’ve had dealings with Ethan before, as he’s the guy who…

Building better characters

One of the most important steps when starting a new game is creating characters. If you are interested in the full roleplaying experience, creating your character is much more complex than just “picking a guy”. Even if the process of creating your character’s stats is pretty simple and straightforward (like in many rules-light or old-school games), the character creation doesn’t…

Dragon Warriors is back

Some time ago I reviewed the Dragon Warriors RPG here on Stargazer’s World. Alas Magnum Opus Press lost the license to produce the game a while ago and all Dragon Warriors products went out of print again. Luckily I was able to get a hardcopy of the core rules and several PDF products before that. As I already mentioned in my review, Serpent King Games picked up the license…

Part-Time Gods

I just got word from Third Eye Games’ Eloy Lasanta that they have an interesting project up on Kickstarter called Part-Time Gods . Part-Time Gods will be their third game line and will be a roleplaying game along the lines of “Nobilis” or “Scion”. But I am sure Eloy can explain it better than I could do it: If you are interested in learning more about that game…
