New, Premium Reprints of the Original AD&D books in April !

By on January 19, 2012

There are some pleasantly surprising news here : Wizards of the Coast decided to release premium reprints of the original Advanced Dungeons & Dragons rulebooks! I’m pretty sure that these will become collector items as soon as they are released.

The books will be released in limited quantity in the middle of April as hard-cover books. They will include the original content, including not just the rules but the original artwork, and featuring a new full-color cover in honor of the memory of Gary Gygax. The new cover is not previewed yet, but depending on the news it should be available soon.

These books will be only available trough the hobby channels of North America, which mean if your are living outside of that continent you will have a much harder time acquiring these books.

Purchase of these collector-item books will help Gygax Memorial Fund in it’s heroic quest to immortalize Gary Gygax, the creator of Dungeons & Dragons and the “Father of Roleplaying Games” with a memorial statue in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

The books are already available in Wizards of the Coast product catalog :

- 1st Edition Premium Player’s Handbook

- 1st Edition Premium Dungeon Master’s Guide

- 1st Edition Premium Monster Manual

Kinda pricy, don’t you think? Ah, well, at least they’ve finally realised that there are a lot of people who would rather play with the original rules.

Well, consider that these are not just simple reprints, but collector items with limited availability. They want you to take them in honor of Gary Gyrax, not to help people play the old edition just 1-2 year before they release 5th edition (D&D Next).

So I think pricing them equal to the 4E Player’s Handbook really makes sense, even if these contain much lower number of pages and maybe no full-color arts, except the cover.
