Review – The One Ring: Words of the Wise
Words of the Wise is an adventure released by Cubicle 7 for The One Ring: Adventures Over the Edge of the Wild roleplaying game, which is recently made available for free download. Originally published at GenCon 2011 when the publisher released their The One Ring RPG it’s now available at “fully designed” version. So, it’s time to have a look.
This is a relatively short adventure (only 11-pages) which could be finished in one sitting. I think while it’s designed as a stand-alone product for inexperienced players it could be used as an introductory adventure for a longer campaign. This is especially true, if you consider the adventure seeds dropped in the adventure.
The story (with lots of spoilers)
The adventure begins near to Rhosgobel in early spring. While the adventurers are hunting together with some local hunters a group of orcs attack them. As they gets back to town they recognize that many other groups was also attacked in the vicinity, which means that there is a big number of orcs arrived into the area. Radagast the wizards therefore sends the players to ask help from the elves.
In the elven lands the characters should convince Thranduil the elven leader to send troops to defend the human settlements. Either they are successful or not they have to return soon to defend the city themselves in a bloody battle against the attacking orcs.
I have to say, that the content provided with the adventure is excellent. The layout of the product is clear, and the artwork is stunning. I think the encounters in the adventure is nicely explained (including the effects of different levels of success for most challenges) and provide everything you would need to play.Especially if you consider that this is a free adventure.
Considering everything I must give this adventure 5/5 stars.
