These are games we’ve encountered with unusually weird themes or mechanics in 2010. See games for 2009 , 2008 , 2007 , 2006 , 2005 . The list is in alphabetical order. Barbarossa : A deck building game from Japan where cute German military girls rush against Moscow to defeat the evil magician Stalin. Game Night, The Aussie/Indian/LA Internet Sitcom

Game Night is an Internet comedy series about game night, somewhere in the same space as KODT: a group of quirky guys and a girl meet to play games. Hilarity ensues. I can’t say much about the acting, scripts, filming, direction, production, etc., but I’ll give them props for effort and enthusiasm. P.S. The titles of the show use German…

IGDA’s Global Game Jam To Include Board and Card Games

The IGDA’s 2010 Global Game Jam included over 4300 people around the world creating video games over 48 rolling hours. This year’s event promises to be larger and will include non-electronic board and card game creation. I’m not entirely sure how that will work with a team spread out over different physical locations; the FAQ on the site doesn’t address it. ( source )

Top 20 Game News Items for 2010

Board and card games did fine in 2010, just as they have been doing for at least the last 20 years. Today’s board and card games are harder to distinguish from video and electronic games. The biggest distinguishing factor …

Mattel Buys Phase 10 from Fundex and iMAGiNiff from Blue Opal

A scant few weeks after reaching a settlement with Phase 10′s designer over unpaid royalties, Indianapolis-based Fundex has sold its bestselling game Phase 10 to Mattel. Phase 10 is the second best selling card game, dwarfed only by Uno , also owned by Mattel. In an unrelated deal, Mattel has bought iMAGiNiff from Australia’s Blue Opal.

Why Do Some Board Games Have ISBNs?

A few but growing number of game publishers use international standard book numbers (ISBNs) on their non-book game products. The vast majority of retailers will only accept products with standardized product codes; accounting and inventory are simply impossible without them. Games, one would assume, should have universal product codes (UPC/EAN-13s) rather than ISBNs (ISBNs are, in fact, a subset of EAN-13s). If you …
