Dominion Storage

By now, with the base game, four expansions, and various promotional decks, you’ll have five boxes and about 1,800 cards of Dominion . That’s a lot to manage, particularly if you’re carrying it away from home. Also, if you’re like me and got the heavy-duty card sleeves then the cards don’t fit back in the plastic slots (fits fine, though, with the regular …

The Top 10 Strangest Games of 2010

These are games we’ve encountered with unusually weird themes or mechanics in 2010. See games for 2009 , 2008 , 2007 , 2006 , 2005 . The list is in alphabetical order. Barbarossa : A deck building game from Japan where cute German military girls rush against Moscow to defeat the evil magician Stalin. The cards alternate or combine shots of scantily clad anime girls against WWII military hardware. Another Arclight deck building anime game from 2010, Little…

Childbirth Game

Just Breath is a perinatal education game from childbirth training specialists Esali Birth . The base game includes 64 cards in four categories: Prenatal Nutrition, Breastfeeding, Perinatal Positions, and General Labor & Birth. There’s also a version with a board and other pieces , a Cravings expansion pack , and blank cards for customizing the game. As a tool for professional trainers, I understand. But let me give some advice …

IGDA’s Global Game Jam To Include Board and Card Games

The IGDA’s 2010 Global Game Jam included over 4300 people around the world creating video games over 48 rolling hours. This year’s event promises to be larger and will include non-electronic board and card game creation. I’m not entirely sure how that will work with a team spread out over different physical locations; the FAQ on the site doesn’t address it. ( source )

Castle Ravenloft

The Castle Ravenloft Board Game is a game from Wizards of the Coast that uses the Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition rules in a board game format instead of a role-playing game. The rules have been slimmed down tremendously from the original form, and allow 1-5 players. That’s right, you can play solo. Castle Ravenloft is the first in a line of board…

FATE “power cards”

We’re currently in the process of converting our 4E D&D game over to FATE due to almost group-wide dissatisfaction with the 4E rules. The specific rules are a mix of Strands of Fate and the Dresden Files RPG, along with some personal tweaks to make the game “feel” like D&D. While almost everyone instantly took to the idea, one of our players really…

Top 20 Game News Items for 2010

Board and card games did fine in 2010, just as they have been doing for at least the last 20 years. Today’s board and card games are harder to distinguish from video and electronic games. Many board and card games come with electronic components, come in hand-held versions, or are playable on your video console, in either traditional or enhanced versions. The biggest distinguishing factor …

Making a Comeback is Making a Comeback

Erin Sherbert at The Examiner wins the clueless award for being the first reporter this year to title an article “Board Games Are Making a Comeback”, a title or phrase which has been used at least once every year since 1990 (aka when video games started making inroads). ( source ) Runners up: Elissa Doherty in the Herald Sun. ( source ) Staff reporter in the Daily …

Game Industry Catalogs

The Greater Games Industry Catalog is a quarterly directory of the hobby game industry, covering mostly US and mostly publishers and distributors. It contains contact and inventory information for around 7-800 companies and 45,000 products (by order number and MSRP). In addition, it contains a small amount of information on non-US companies as well as several articles on the industry in each issue. They have sent me complimentary copies of the…

Resident Evil [Deck Building Game]

Every video game deserves a card game version, right? Must be so; the latest is Resident Evil. And as you can tell from the subtitle, Bandai has decided to follow the deck-building trend, rather than the standard CCG. Good for them! Resident Evil Deck Building Game includes three modes of play: Story mode—where each player tries to collect the best weapons and other resources for fighting …

Rules Mastery For Dummies & Busy GMs Part 2: Getting Enthusiastic About Rules

Last time around, Johnn described (via exerpted email) his difficulty in getting enthusiastic about reading rules. Johnn has been making a common mistake, and it’s one that I have been guilty of myself in the past. When reading rules becomes tiresome, we avoid reading and re-reading the rules because we have the impression that we have to read them in one solid…

Mattel Buys Phase 10 from Fundex and iMAGiNiff from Blue Opal

A scant few weeks after reaching a settlement with Phase 10′s designer over unpaid royalties, Indianapolis-based Fundex has sold its bestselling game Phase 10 to Mattel. Phase 10 is the second best selling card game, dwarfed only by Uno , also owned by Mattel. In an unrelated deal, Mattel has bought iMAGiNiff from Australia’s Blue Opal.

Roll vs Boredom: Mentally Challenged

Roll vs Boredom is an ongoing project to fight off boredom from behind the game master’s screen.  My challenge to myself, to create one signature mechanic for every “adventure” I run in my current campaign, whether that be one night of play or a whole month to complete.   In the first article of this series, I discuss the…
