The Gamification Platform

Gamify.com has launched a Gamification Platform. The platform is essentially an online score keeping and reward system that lets you turn any online based activity into a game of sorts. While interesting in its own right – I could turn commenting on Purple Pawn posts into a game, for instance – I can also envision its use by game companies to connect all of the people who …

Khet 2.0

Innovention Toys has redesigned the laser board game Khet. It’s more Khet 1.5 than a Khet 2.0 : the box has changed, the game is lighter, and the pieces are sculpted and thematic, as opposed to the block shapes from the first set. The rules don’t appear to have changed. 1.5 or 2.0, lasers are still cool. ( image )

Game Industry Roundup

Alfred Kahn, CEO of 4Kids Entertainment , announced his retirement. 4Kids took a colossal beating over the last few years, failing to get Chaotic up and running and getting de-listed from NYSE. They, or their properties, are still for sale. ( source ) Bryan Stockton takes over as COO of Mattel . Bob Eckert is still CEO and plans to remain there. Mattel recently announced that it is licensing some of…

Toylets, More Games for Your Urinal

Since Peeball obviously hasn’t exhausted the great untapped market for games that can be played at a urinal (I’m carefully trying to avoid using certain phrases here in order to avoid showing up on the wrong Google searches), Sega is testing out a few games called Toylets . Unlike their analog counterparts, these games include digital components to flash your score, including high scores downloadable by…

Sifteo cubes are little computers that have motion detectors in them. They can also detect nearby Sifteo cubes. What’s so cool about that? They also connect wirelessly to your computer, and will have an app store to download all sorts of games to the cubes. The board gaming possibilities with these babies is almost infinite. They’re not out yet, but should …

December Board and Card Game Patents

Dear Patent Office: It’s 2011. Why don’t you accept videos in your submissions, in addition to the wholly inadequate pictures? It would make the patents a lot easier to understand. Team matching – From Microsoft. Using the ELO system to form teams. The abstract, and in fact the entire patent, doesn’t actually say that the patent actually does anything, only that the patent MAY do something; MAY…

Game Criminal Statistics 2010

Our game criminal roundups are mostly a result of Google News alerts. It’s fair to say that a great majority of game related violence is not reported (assaults, petty robberies, and so on), or not noted as game related (not noting that a robbery was of a card game), or simply not carried on Google News. What do we learn from a year of game related…

Article Claims Game Art is Sexist

In the latest issue of Pelgrane Press’ online magazine, See Page XX , Anna Kreider analyzes the art of both tabletop and electronic games, comparing their depictions of male and female figures, and concludes that game art is sexist. Unfortunately, I’m not at all surprised at the results.

Second Look—New World Colony

Back in October I had posted about New World Colony , a board game released for the iPad. Since then I’ve had the opportunity to play the game, and even got early access to version 3 ( which is now in the App Store ) The game really does feel like a cross between The Settlers of Catan and Risk . Every turn you get …
