Paper Money #43: Not the one about NY Toy Fair

Ben and Rett decide to wait one more show to talk about NY Toy Fair and instead ponder the Star Wars license and delve into some excellent reader mail about why you can’t find game sales figures on the Internet and more. All wrapped in a cozy blanket of friendly banter and, as is becoming the norm, weekly corrections! This is another long show, running just under …

Íslenskuspilið

I seem to be fascinated with Icelandic board games, so here is Íslenskuspilið from Þekkingarnet Þingeyinga (aka the Húsavík Academic Center), a roll and move trivia game with 864 word questions to help you learn Icelandic. The game is by Selma Kristjánsdóttir, who is a teacher or an author or a singer or a politician or something (my Icelandic isn’t very good). ( image )

Quarriors, a Dice Pool Building Game

I guess it was only a matter of time. This summer WizKids will publish Quarriors , a dice game where you build up an army of dice in much the same way that a deck-building game lets you build a deck. The game comes with 130 custom dice and cards that represent creatures you need to beat and spells you can cast; no shuffling required.

Scrumbrawl

Scrumbrawl , coming soon from sggc VicTim Games (two guys named Vic and Tim), is a fantasy arena combat/rugby game. I don’t have the rules, but it looks decidedly chaotic. You can pre-order a boxed set for…

Kolejka: Polish Board Game About Waiting in Line

Poland’s Institute of National Remembrance ( Instytut Pamięci Narodowej (IPN) ) has created a historical board game about the Communist era. The game simulates citizens waiting in line to buy scant supplies of groceries. Players jockey for position in the lines, using excuses like “I’m a woman with a baby”, but may end up at stores that have run out of supplies, anyway. It …

The Gamification Platform

Gamify.com has launched a Gamification Platform. The platform is essentially an online score keeping and reward system that lets you turn any online based activity into a game of sorts. While interesting in its own right – I could turn commenting on Purple Pawn posts into a game, for instance – I can also envision its use by game companies to connect all of the people who …

Khet 2.0

Innovention Toys has redesigned the laser board game Khet. It’s more Khet 1.5 than a Khet 2.0 : the box has changed, the game is lighter, and the pieces are sculpted and thematic, as opposed to the block shapes from the first set. The rules don’t appear to have changed. 1.5 or 2.0, lasers are still cool. ( image )

Musketeers, Cavaliers, & Court Intrigue: The Card Game

This thematic combat game comes from The Swashbuckler Press, and is self-published at The Game Crafter .
