School of Hard Knocks – Dresden Files game set in Kaiserwerth, Germany

Character Creation We finished up most of the characters today for the after-school club’s Dresden Files RPG game today and I’m really impressed at how well the characters, setting, and the various aspects are gelling – there are a bunch of connected elements we’ve managed to reincorporate across various characters, locations, and threats which has  created a pretty cool…

Casefile: Neutral Grounds for the Dresden Files RPG now available

This is the first adventure published for the game and best yet, it’s free. Check it out here .

4E AP: Osirion Session #11 (Old Friends & Enemies)

Another somewhat abbreviated report as I attempt to get caught up. Session Summary Having decided the easiest and least violent way to eliminate the Katapeshian Pactmasters’ interest in Kelmarane was to destroy the pesh cacti fields and that the only effective way to do that was to infect the field with Feverblight. The irony here was that they would need a sizable …

4E AP: Osirion Session #10 (Separate Ways)

Due to a heavy work load I fell behind writing my campaign summary despite the sessions marching onwards. Over the next couple days I hope to get caught up. As a result these are going to be more cursory than my normal AP reports. A lot has changed since this session (which occurred way back in November), not the least of which is we’ve stopped playing 4th edition D&D…

School is back in session

School is now back in session and that means the after-school gaming club starts up again tomorrow. First on our agenda is finishing up our Dresden Files RPG character creation session, including the shared stories and their associated Aspects. With six players I expect this will take the entire session with actual play starting up next week. As far as where we’ll begin, I think …

Review – A tale of 3 Fudge dice sets

This is a review of three different sets of Fudge dice – two made by Grey Ghost Press (the GM’s Pack and the new Olympic set) and one made by Evil Hat Productions (the Wizard set). A Brief Overview of Fudge Dice For those not familiar with Fudge dice, these are 6-sided dice with two faces marked with a +, two …

My 2011 Gaming Resolutions

I’m a few days late since I was on vacation through the holidays, but better late than never. Here are my 2011 game-related resolutions: Continuing playing RPGs on a weekly basis – we get to play nearly every Sunday now, up from once per month just a couple years ago, and I’d like to keep that going so …

Wow, D&D is now truly a CCG

*Gag* I predicted this would happen when WotC announced that the Gamma World boosters would involve a collectible element. This one is the ultimate in stupidity though: I especially love the fact that these are clearly being positioned to be released in waves of card series. Talk about ruining a RPG by monetizing every aspect of it.

Detroit in Ruins – Photographs of a city in decline

These are some very haunting, cool, and evocative photos of just a few of the once grand, now decrepit, places in Detroit. The first thing that springs to my mind is “post-apocalyptic” making these great sources of inspiration or props for games like Apocalypse World or Gamma World. http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/gallery/2011/jan/02/photography-detroit

I’ve been on vacation….

We headed off to sunny Florida right before Christmas for a couple weeks of R&R during which I’ve taken a break from my blog as well. I should be back to my regular schedule of blogging in a few days, including my annual 2010 resolution wrap-up and 2011 gaming resolutions. I also will have a series of reviews coming so stay tuned!

What Lies Beneath… (Dresden Files RPG AP)

The player characters in the third session were Fatih Yilmaz a young Turkish ectomancer; Professor Henry van Bergen , a Prussian historian with a lot of knowledge about magic; Horatio Quinn IV , an American wizard from a long line of wizards; Kieran Dorn , a Scots-German ex-cop PI; and Quincey Harker V , a vampire hunter with inhuman speed and reflexes. The major NPCs were Konrad Schiffer , scion of Portonus…

A picture is worth a thousand words when it comes to characters

For longer-term campaigns, I love finding a drawing or photo for each of my characters – something to give me and the others at the table an idea of who my character is, or at least what he looks like. Thanks to Google images and Photoshop, you can do some really cool things with just a few minutes of effort. Case in…

FATE “power cards”

We’re currently in the process of converting our 4E D&D game over to FATE due to almost group-wide dissatisfaction with the 4E rules. The specific rules are a mix of Strands of Fate and the Dresden Files RPG, along with some personal tweaks to make the game “feel” like D&D. While almost everyone instantly took to the idea, one of our players really…

Pick up “A Better Game With Dice and Chips” and buy a kid a toy

OneBookShelf, owners of RPGNow and DriveThruRPG have just announced the release of A Better Game With Dice and Chips , a complete collection of every “A Better Game” article written in 2010, as well as every “Bring Dice and Chips” and “Behind the Panels” comic strip created. All of the proceeds from the sales will go to Toys for Tots so this is definitely an item worth …

RPG Buffet plays 4E D&D

I just finished listening to the latest episode of the All Games Considered podcast in which their “RPG Buffet” group discussed their experiences playing 4th edition D&D. This is their last stop on a yearly goal of playing all the editions of D&D. Although they do their best to avoid saying it outright, it’s clear the game didn’t really appeal to any of…

Review – Dust Devils Revenged

Dust Devils is a rules-light storytelling game that focuses on tales of redemption in the Old West. The elegant system both cleaves close to the source material (poker hands for task resolution!) and does a great job generating stories of inner demons and redemption. It takes role-playing in several unusual directions, but it is sufficiently clever that everyone should at least…

Gaming with Kids: A High School Fiasco (the Apple Valley High Session)

I’ve run three games of Fiasco over the past three weeks at the after-school club, each of them a big hit with the high school students, so much so that we’ve actually had drop in players based on word of mouth. This is a summary of the second game which was a playtest of a young adult specific play…
