by Sundown is a free Call of Cthulhu adventure, set in the Old West. It's a really great tribute by Dale Envy, to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Call of Cthulhu.
The adventure is 26 page long, and is filled with very detailed encounters. I think Dale Envy perfectly sets the dark mood from the beginning, when the characters are joining a posse to hunt down a killer, which gets even scarier until the end.
The story starts, when a young girl Alina Huddle was brutally killed and dismembered by a veteran soldier, Barton Duvall. The angry townsfolk gather a posse of armed men and women (tha player characters) led by Deputy Fox to take Duvall back to the city, and bring him to justice.
The encounters are well written, and they nicely move the players toward the horrific end, always keeping them on their toes. While, there are great otherworldly powers are in motions, the outcome is really dependent on the decisions of the player characters.
This is intended as a short adventure, for a single gaming night, or for a three-hour convention round. Maybe it could be a good star, if you want to run a whole campaign on the Old West, and the book provide some adventure hooks to continue after you finished Sundown.
Sundown include 8 pre-generated characters, which I recommend to use for the adventure. All of the characters have a rich background, with connections to the city and each other.
